More United States investors are interested in Thailand, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva told reporters during a video conference interview with reporters at Government House on Thursday.

Mr Abhisit. who is in the US for the UN General Assembly and G20 meetings, said he had met investors throughout Wednesday to explain government policies and expand trade and investment cooperation.

“I received positive responses from them and many of them expressed interest in expanding their investments to Thailand,” the prime minister said.

He said the New York Stock Exchange had been coordinating and exchanging information with stock markets in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean), and closer coordination could draw more US investors to the Southeast Asian region.

Asked if foreign investors were interested in Thai politics and issues relating to fugitive former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, Mr Abhisit said those who were familiar with Thai politics were not paying much attention to the country’s political situation.

The prime minister said it was a good thing the government, opposition and senate whips were meeting to discuss the constitution amendment proposals.

“The majority of the people will decide how the charter will be amended,” he said.

Mr Abhisit is to attend the 64th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York and the G20 Summit in Pittsburgh. He is scheduled to return to Thailand on Sept 27.
He is scheduled to address the general assembly on Saturday night Bangkok time. He will be the second speaker that day.

PM Abhisit gavels to close the trading day during the closing bell at the NYSE on Sept 23.
